The Final Goodbye

1- I have learned so many useful skills in LALT 101 that will guide me through many future reasearches. Some of these skills are learning how to REFgrab a website to REFworks, opening an account in the ILLIAD in order to search for sources which can not be found in any AUC database, and developing my own blog in blogger.com.

2- Well, I'm still confused on one issue involving the incomplete articles in many of the databases. How can I use a single paragraph, usually a summary of the article or journal, in my research paper which it's length is barley one page?

I would've liked to spend more time blogging and communicating with other people on the web.

3- In respect to blogging, it's a semi-private homepage where I'm able to express my thoughts and ideas with other people who share the same topics that I'm also involved in.

4- LALT has been an enriching experience from day 1, and I have improved my search skills, citing articles, and using the library databases more usefully.

Database Comparison

Database 1

1- PsycARTICLES
2- Psychology
3- 1988 - present
4- Includes more than 25,000 full-text articles from 42 journals published by American Psychological Association and allied organizations.
5- No, it's authorized to AUC users and on-campus visitors only.
6- Yes, full text is available.

Databse 2

1- PsycInfo
2- Psychology
3- 1872-present
4- PsycInfo provides indexes to journals, dissertations, book chapters, books, technical reports, and other documents and they're updated weekly.
5- No, it's authorized to AUC users and on-campus visitors only.
6- Some full text is available to selected journals.

The two databases are useful, but I would prefer to use the PsycARTICLES database much more than the PsycInfo database. They are both easier to use, but I noticed that PsycARTICLES offers full-text articles which seem better for researches and receiving more information about any specific topic. Some articles in PsycInfo had a 'click' on "Linksource for Full text" underneath the article, and then when finally opening a separate web page for this link, another website (sciencedirect.com) asked for a user name and password. It's much more time consuming to get information, and becomes annoying after a while. I would actually use PsycInfo for one reason only, and it is to pull information and articles from articles written over a hundred years ago. This database covers journals and article all the way from 1872 which is very helpful to get original text written by Charles Darwin or Freud. Definitely, I would use PsycARTICLES for most of my researches even though the the information on it is limited from 1988 until today. I would prefer that PsycInfo includes more full text articles, and turn the database into an enriched source of "full" information".

1- What effect does violence in the media have on children?

2- Psychology, Journalism & Mass Media and Communication, and Cultural Studies & Ethnic Studies.

3- Psychology, Mass Communication, and Film.

4- Communication & Mass Media Complete: This search engine has a clear look on all aspects relating to mass media issues, which directly relates to youth violence generated from media.

Oxford Journals Online: This search engine is not as specific as the first one, but it covers my research question's main topic and goes in more depth referring to the psychological side of children and media violence.
